Sori Academic Forum
2024 Sori Festival’s new program, “Sori Academic Forum,” will be held in collaboration with academic associations and research institutes related to Korean traditional arts. This program is designed to raise awareness of the current status and challenges of traditional arts through collaboration between the performing arts world and academia. This year, the Korean Pungmulgut Society, the Society for Dance Documentation & History, the Pansori Society, the Society of Korean Folk Songs, and the Center for Intangible Culture Studies will discuss the current status and challenges of local traditional arts, with a focus on Jeonbuk State.
Pansori of Jeonbuk State
Pansori is a representative traditional art of Jeollabuk-do Province. The region has produced many master pansori singers and percussionists, and pansori lovers and patrons have helped to create, nurture, and florish the pansori tradition that continues so far. Jeonju hosts Jeonju International Sori Festival and Jeonju Daesaseuppnori, while Gochang operates the Pansori Museum and Pansori Training Center. Lively activities such as the Chunhyang Festival and the Heungbo Festival are held in Namwon, and Sunchang can also be said to be of great significance as a place that has produced famous families of pansori artists. Therefore, in this conference, scholars will find and discuss various discourses on the topic of activities related to pansori culture and its transmission in the region.
