Performance Introduction

2024 Sori Festival ‘Five Pansori Stories’

From National Treasures of the Year to Rising Stars!

This year, Jeonju International Sori Festival’s signature performance series, “Five Pansori Stories,” consists of three sections featuring both young artists and nationally renowned singers, allowing all generations to enjoy pansori performances together. The section of “Treasure-master of the Year” will feature elderly singers who will showcase their long history of performance. “Masters of Our Era” will feature veteran performers who have been active with their passion for pansori, and the “Rising Star” section will feature talented young artists. Let us watch the spectrum of pansori where each story has its own unique charm.

Program

Lee Jaram’s Dongpyeon-je Jeokbyeok-ga of Park Bongsul’s Style

Lee Jaram, a disciple of Unsan Song Sunseop (holder of Pansori, the National Intangible Cultural Heritage), will perform in the “Five Pansori Stories” Program at 2024 Sori Festival. She will perform “Dongpyeon-je (lit. singing-style developed in the eastern part from Seomjin River) Jeokbyeok-ga of Park Bongsul’s Style,” from the part of “Oath of the Peach Garden” to “Taryeong for Birds.” Lee Jaram is a certificated trainee of Jeokbyeok-ga and Chunhyang-ga, and has studied Dongpyeon-je Jeokbyeok-ga and Heungbo-ga from master Song Sunseop for 15 years.

Song Sunseop’s Dongpyeon-je style has been transmitted based on master Song Heungrok’s style as a standard, and was inherited by Song Gwangrok, Song Wuryeong, Park Mansoon, and Song Mangap. Park Bongsul, the best pupil of Song Mangap, was designated as the holder of Pansori Jeokbyeok-ga, the National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 1973. Song Sunseop, Park Bongsul’s beloved disciple, became the holder of Pansori Jeokbyeok-ga in 2002, and has been teaching his students Dongpyeon-je Jeokbyeok-ga, Heungbo-ga and Sugung-ga.

Master Park Geunyeong, the holder of Daejeon’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (pansori gobeop (percussion)) who has long been performing Dongpyeon-je Jeokbyeok-ga, will join in the festival stage.
