Performance Introduction

2024 Sori Festival ‘Five Pansori Stories’

From National Treasures of the Year to Rising Stars!

This year, Jeonju International Sori Festival’s signature performance series, “Five Pansori Stories,” consists of three sections featuring both young artists and nationally renowned singers, allowing all generations to enjoy pansori performances together. The section of “Treasure-master of the Year” will feature elderly singers who will showcase their long history of performance. “Masters of Our Era” will feature veteran performers who have been active with their passion for pansori, and the “Rising Star” section will feature talented young artists. Let us watch the spectrum of pansori where each story has its own unique charm.

Program

Park Gabin’s Cho Sanghyeon-badi, Kim Sejong-je Chunhyang-ga

Park Gabin is a talented artist who strives to better understand pansori narratives and convey emotions musically. On the 2024 Sori Festival stage, she will perform “Kim Sejong-je Chunhyang-ga.” This style of Chunhyang-ga, which has been passed down from Kim Sejong to Jung Eungmin, Cho Sanghyeon, Yeom Gyeongae, and Park Gabin, is a unique style in which Park Yujeon’s seopyeon-je (“western” from Seomjin River) style is incorporated into Kim Sejong’s dongpyeon-je (“eastern”) one. Thus, this style combines dongpyeon-je’s grandiosity and sopyeon-je’s sorrowfulness. The festival stage will be divided into three sub-sections, and will include several songs from “Gisanyeongsu,” the first part, to “Deojildeojil,” the last part of Chyunhang-ga. Park Jongho and Park Jonghoon will play buk percussion to add excitement to the stage.
