Program

Kim Songji’s Gangsan-je Sugung-ga

“Gangsan-je” is a school of pansori developed during the reign of Emperor Gojong’s reign in the Daehan (Korean) Empire. Park Yujeon, the master of seopyeon-je (“western”) style, founded this style through embracing the grandiosity of dongpyeon-je (“eastern” style) and the clear vocalization style of junggo-je (“upper-middle area” style). The style is characterized by its clarity, restraint and elegant voice, and is also known as richly-descriptive imyeon (musical depiction of narrated text). On the stage, Kim Songji will perform part of Sugung-ga, from the introductory section to “Tiger’s Descending.”
