Distinctive Young Artists’ Pansori Stages
“Ode to Youth – Young Pansori,” stages for young artists with uniqueness, is held at the historic site of Jeollagamyeong (the local government office of the Joseon Dynasty era) where a tranquil and stylish atmosphere can be experienced. Let us feel the unique aesthetic of pansori through the passionate performances of talented young artists.
Cho Jeonggyu’s Dongcho-je Simcheong-ga
“Dongcho-je Simcheong-ga” originated from Master Dongcho Kim Yeonsu and was then passed on to masters Oh Jeongsuk, Lee Ilju, and Kim Yeon. It is constructed through Kim Yeonsu’s gathering of the essential virtues of “eastern” and “western” styles and organizing them in a coherent manner. This style is said to appeal to the public’s taste and and at the same time enhance the classiness of pansori performers by sublimating Simcheong’s devotion to her father to a universal value and by elaborating narrative texts. On this year’s Sori Festival stage, Cho Jeonggyu will perform part of Simcheong-ga – from “Sim the Blind at the Mangsadae Memorial” to “Lamentation.”
