Spain Focus


The Jeonju Int'l Sori Festival 2025 prepared a special program of “Spain Focus” to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Korea and Spain. The “Spain Focus” is significant in that it marks the beginning of international exchange through performances. Lina Tur Bonet & Hong Seunga & Arend Grosfeld will present Baroque-era classical music in a traditional style Korean hanok house, and Vigüela will show Spanish folk music with its simple yet resonant sounds. In addition, Teatro Real will deliver a vibrant and dynamic flamenco performance. all these performances will offer an opportunity to experience diverse charms that reflect Spain's culture, history, and art.


The Essence of Baroque Music Experienced in a Tranquil Traditional House


Internationally acclaimed violinist and conductor Lina Tur Bonet, cellist Hong Seunga who has gained attentioin on various international stages for her delicate yet profound performances, and pianist and harpsichordist Arend Grosfeld who has collaborated with leading early music ensembles in Korea, interpreting Baroque music with diverse moods and styles, will come together on stage at the 2025 Jeonju International Sori Festival.

The three instrumentalists will introduce the essence of Baroque music of the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe. Additionally, they will bring audiences on a journey to experience the diverse colors and emotions of Baroque music through various works by composers from Germany, Italy, and Spain. The performance at the historic house of Wanju Awongoteak, which embodies the elegance, tranquility, and beautiful scenery, will offer a unique experience where Korean traditional architecture and Baroque classical music will become harmonized.

Performers
Baroque Violin Lina Tur Bonet
Lina Tur Bonet is a world-renowned violinist and conductor who has been praised as “a virtuoso with fiery passion” (The Strad) and “a violinist of the soul” (Sankei Shimbun) for her outstanding performance skills and musicality. From her early years, she has collaborated with legendary figures such as Claudio Abbado, John Eliot Gardiner, and William Christie, and has performed on major stages, including the London Proms, Berlin Philharmonic, and Sydney Opera House. Currently she serves as a concert master of Jordi Savall's Le Concert des Nations, and has conducted various orchestras including Tafel Musik Toronto and the Toulouse Chamber Orchestra. She has released 18 albums, receiving acclaim from BBC and Deutsche Grammophon, and was selected as the “Album of the Year” in Japan in 2022. She continues to engage in a wide range of activities, from introducing unpublished early music pieces by composers such as Matteis and Pisendel to collaborating with contemporary composers. She is currently educating the next generation of musicians at the Reina Sofia Music School in Madrid and the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Weimar.
Baroque Cello Hong Seunga
Cellist Hong Seunga has gained attention from the American music scene and praised by “The Republic” for her “delicate sensibility and luxurious golden tone.” She has been recognized for her talent on the international stage, winning the second-place (without the first-place) at the Osaka International Competition and the grand prize at the Indianapolis Matinee Competition. She has performed with various ensembles such as the Busan Philharmonic Orchestra and the New Jersey Baroque Orchestra. She earned dual degrees in cello and Baroque cello from the Korea National University of Arts and Indiana University, where she also obtained her master's degree and an Artist Diploma. Currently she is dedicated to nurturing the next generations while performing as a principal guest cellist at the Gangnam Symphony Orchestra and the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra.
Harpsichord Arend Grosfeld
Pianist and harpsichordist Arend Grosfeld graduated from the Royal Conservatory of The Hague in the Netherlands and earned a master's degree from the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland. He has been invited to perform at various prestigious early music festivals in Europe, including the Musikfestspiele Potsdam-Sanssouci and the Utrecht Early Music Festival, and has released a harpsichord album with the Audioguy label. He has actively collaborated with leading early music ensembles in Korea and has taught at the Korea National University of Arts and Seoul Theological University. His performances are highly acclaimed for his delicate interpretation of the diverse emotions and styles of 17th- and 18th-century European Baroque music.
