Gangsan-je Chunhyang-ga by Yeom Gyeongae
Master Yeom Gyeongae was born in Namwon. She is a descendant of Yeom Gyedal, one of the eight great pansori singers of the late Joseon Dynasty, and began her pansori career under the guidance of her aunt, Yeom Geumhyang. She learned “Gangsan-je Chunhyang-ga and Simcheong-ga” from Jo Sanghyun, and “Sugung-ga” and “Jeokbyeok-ga” from An Suksun. In 2002, she won the grand prize at the 28th Jeonju Daesaseupnori Pansori Competition, becoming the youngest winner, which led to the policy-change in the competition's eligibility criteria. She is renowned for her wide vocal range, powerful quality voice, and delicate emotional expression.
“Gangsan-je Chunhyang-ga” is a style by Park Yujeon, characterized by well-structured musical arrangements for appropriate depiction of text and by its grand as well as quaint charm. This style is typically performed by male performers who can forcefully push or squeeze their voice out. However, Master Yeom Gyeongae, with her talented vocal ability, is the one who is expected to realize the sonic essence of Gangsan-je Chunhyang-ga. Master Lee Taebaek will perform buk-accompaniment for her voice.
