[2020 Sori Festival Sinawi]

The leading artists of Jeollabuk-do will gather for Sori Festival this year.

“2020 Sori Festival Sinawi”, a special Sinawi team for the Opening Performance of the 2020 Sori Festival will not only present the essence of Korean traditional music, but also join the improvisation together with world music artists from 9 countries to show the real values of the ‘Sinawi’.

Khoomei Beat(Tuva  Republic, Russia)

이미지

Khoomei Beat represents the new generation of Tuvan musicians. Taking their inspiration from Tuvan folk music, these musicians are mixing it with elements of rock music, light jazz and pop. This allows them to tell their listeners about the history, traditions and customs of their nation in a modern way. In their music one can feel the power of the wind, which brings the smell of mountain herbs, and scenes of herds of sheep and grazing horses in the mountain valleys.

Khoomei Beat popularizes Tuvan throat singing in a new and different way. Sometimes its a roaring, then tender and caressing sound, with a background of Igil, Byzaanchi, drums, bass-guitar and keyboard, that altogether represent a new impression for the listeners. And sounds of the cello add spicy seasoning, and a savory sensitivity to the overall sound of the band.

The band takes its inspiration from both old archive records and modern music. Tuvan folk music and throat singing stay as a starting point, but dont restrict the musicians: remaining faithful to national roots, they are open to various styles and new trends.

ESSE-Quintet(St. Petersburg,  Russia)

이미지

ESSE-Quintet is a group of five bright modern musicians, who love playing music on national instruments from Saint-Petersburg. The ensemble was created in 2007 by the students of the Saint Petersburg State University of Culture and Arts, and Rimsky-Korsakov Saint Petersburg State Conservatory. All the members of the ensemble are very charming, artistic, and are masterly musicians. On their technically and timbre-wise unique instruments, they have control over compositions written in the genres of folk and classical music, in all their rich variety of styles and songs, as well as the compositions made in a currently very  popular style of ”classical crossover”, where complex musical image is created using intonations of different genres and styles.

ESSE-Quintet invites only the most famous singers from Mariinsky and Bolshoi Theatres to perform. The versatility of the program, from classical music to pop and even rock music, amazing musical arrangements; creating the impression of the sound of a real orchestra, imagery performance and soulful solos are the characteristic signs of this ensemble.

Constantinople(Canada, Iran)

이미지

Constantinople is a musical ensemble that chose the journey - geographical certainly, but also historical, cultural and inner - as its cornerstone. It draws inspiration from all sources and aims for distant horizons. Inspired by the ancient city illuminating the East and West, Constantinople was founded in 1998 in Montreal by its artistic director, Kiya Tabassian.

Since its founding, the ensemble has promoted the creation of new works incorporating musical elements of diverse musical traditions around the world, drawing from medieval manuscripts to a contemporary aesthetic, passing by Mediterranean Europe to Eastern traditions and New World Baroque. Underpinned by a spirit of research and creation, Constantinople has joined forces with leading international artists such as singers Marco Beasley, Françoise Atlan, Savina Yannatou and Suzie Le Blanc; the Mandinka griot Ablaye Cissoko; the Greek ensemble En Chordais, the Belgian duo Belem and the American group The Klezmatics; Sarangi Virtuoso Dhruba Ghosh, Syrian clarinetist and composer Kinan Azmeh, and Iranian kamancheh master Kayhan Kalhor.

Vigüela (Spain)

이미지

Vigüela was born in the mid-80s and sought in the popular manifestations of their land a way to channel their creative desires, without having to adopt musical styles that were alien to them. The history of Vigüela is the story of a vital surrender to a cultural legacy of a wild and very ignored beauty: the traditional music of the center of the Iberian Peninsula.

They are the first group to take the traditional styles (Jota, Seguidilla, Fandango,Son), interpreted as in their natural environment, with a large part of improvisation, and with an approach of artistic excellence, to the international professional stages of music of the world.

With their music, Vigüela wants to enable people of different ages to interact and enjoy it and to maintain their intergenerational connection.

They have performed at referential festivals, such as WOMAD UK, Forde in Norway, for Klangkosmos, with 12 concerts in Germany. In 2019 they performed in Spain, Poland (May and July), Germany, Slovenia (photo below, at Okarina festival in Bled), Portugal, Serbia and Uzbekistan.

Toine Thys' Overseas (Belgium, Egypt,  Luxembourg, Brazil)

이미지

Toine Thys is a bold and reckless musician, a central figure for the saxophone and the bass clarinet in Europe, with a warm tone. He is active as a leader of his own projects, and a much-in-demand sideman through Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. He can be heard as well in Western Africa, South Korea and Canada.

OVERSEAS is the story of the meeting between the Toine Thys and the Egyptian oud player Ihab Radwan. After sharing several European stages together for concerts and cartes blanches, they are now exploring a four-part format group, accompanied by the percussionist Zé Luis Nascimento, and the Luxembourg cellist Annemie Osborne. At the crossroads of Arabic music and Hijazz modes, jazz and tonal improvisation, classical music and rhythms of Brazilian music, they play an evolving repertoire, made of clear, free and melodious compositions.

These musicians meet and talk about their respective worlds. Their stories and their intonations are different and they benefit from these differences. Simplicity and seriousness, joy and exploration, the quartet play together with skill in opposites to each other. It is a musical space where the integrity of these artists is respected, but where the taste of adventure and discovery remains essential.

Their language is like a mood, black or white, hot or cold, circulating faster or slower than blood or thought, in invisible veins that are not located in any anatomy manual.

Boi Akih Duo(Netherlands)

이미지

Monica Akihary and Niels Brouwer, known as Boi Akih, are winning increasing acclaim for their concerts. Norwegian magazine Jazznytt wrote: It was all captivating, each minimalistic expression by either guitar or voice, every sound variation in Akihary's great vocal vocabulary, each crisp or subtle phrase on Brouwers guitar, every powerful discharge from this perfectly attuned duo would make Charlie Parker long to come back to life.

Boi Akih has developed a distinctive repertoire, one in which cultural roots form the basis for composition, improvisation and text. The new program of the duo reflects the development of their own musical language whereby sound and elements from various traditions take on a new meaning.

The warm and lithe voice of Akihary and the guitar playing of Brouwer offer the audience a vista of a world filled with emotion and colour. [PM1] A concert by this duo is an amazing experience. The voice of Akihary is exceptionally nuanced. With her spot on timing, tone and charismatic personality, she immediately touches the heart of the listener, just as Brouwers abstract passages sound warm throughout.
