The Night of Jeong-ga and Beompae
Their vague lingering sound involves moderation leaving profundity
Jeong-ga and Beompae belong to our traditional three songs. Is there any common feature between them? They are the songs to heal our body and mind. 'The Night of Jeong-ga and Beompae' will present an opportunity for you to get away from the noisy, stressful world and discover yourselves with the help of music.
Jeong-ga
Jeong-ga includes gagok, gasa, and sijo, among which gagok was loved by gentlemen because it was helpful for their moral training. In the 2013 Sori Festival, Kang Gwonsun, the graduate and the 30th important intangible cultural asset of Yeochang gagok, and Kim Byeong-o of Jeong-ak Group of The National Center of Korean Traditional Performing Arts will present traditional gagok songs according to its types of notes.
Beompae (Buddhist Hymn)
This year, the Sori Festival Committee have decided to welcome to the stage for the very first time 'The Beompae Night'. It is a very unique performance that the audience may not ordinarily have the chance to come into contact with. Beompae is mostly used in ritual ceremonies in Buddhist temples, and has a single melody with no beat at all. Beompae is used mainly in 5 ritual ceremonies: Sangjugwongongjae (a service performed for the repose of a soul; it usually takes a day); Siwanggakbaejae (for 10 kings in the underworld who judge the dead); Saengjeonyesujae (for oneself still living); Suryukjae (for lonely or starving ghosts in land or water); Yeongsanjae (for the dead; it usually takes three days).
This performance will be led by the Buddhist Inmuk, the disciple of the dead monk Ilwoong, the possessor of the Yeongsanjae Buddhist dance of the 50th Important Intangible Cultural Asset. The audience will enter into a new world full of tranquility.
